Senior AI Prompt Engineer and AI/ML Solutions Developer
Function: AI/ML Solutions, Prompt Engineering, Data Engineering, and Government Technology Innovation
Location: Remote, with ability to attend customer meetings in Chantilly, Virginia as needed
Reports to: Program Technical Lead, AI Initiatives; Workforce 3 Engineering Leadership
Position Summary
BCG Federal is seeking a Senior AI Prompt Engineer and AI/ML Solutions Developer to support artificial intelligence and Generative AI initiatives across government programs. This role focuses on designing, developing, and deploying practical AI-enabled solutions aligned to operational government use cases, including workflow automation, document generation, meeting summarization, test-case generation, risk and issue reporting, research synthesis, decision-support analytics, and agent-based process automation.
The primary need for this role is a senior practitioner who can create effective AI prompts, build reusable prompt frameworks, design agentic workflows, and translate operational problems into working AI-enabled solutions. The successful candidate must be able to work independently, participate in discovery and solutioning discussions, understand the customer’s operational problem, and then take initiative to build, test, refine, and document practical solutions without waiting for step-by-step direction.
This role requires more than traditional data science. The ideal candidate will combine strong prompt engineering skills, applied AI/ML experience, Python development, data engineering, workflow automation, and practical understanding of secure government environments. The candidate should be comfortable working with program leadership, BCG and BCG X personnel, technical teams, government stakeholders, and contractor teams to move AI pilot efforts from concept to working prototype and, where appropriate, toward scalable implementation.
Job Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and refine AI prompts, reusable prompt libraries, structured prompt frameworks, and prompt-driven workflows for government operational use cases.
- Build practical Generative AI solutions that support use cases such as meeting notes summarization, document processing, test case generation, risk and issue reporting, research synthesis, code set proposal development, workflow automation, and decision-support analytics.
- Develop AI-enabled workflows using tools such as GenAI.mil Gemini, Ask Sage, no-code agent builders, workflow automation platforms, Python, APIs, and related AI/ML development tools.
- Translate customer needs, business processes, meeting discussions, and operational pain points into clear technical approaches, solution designs, prototypes, and implementation plans.
- Participate in discovery and solutioning meetings with BCG, BCG X, government stakeholders, contractor teams, and technical leads; identify what needs to be built and independently begin developing the solution.
- Build and refine agentic workflows, including multi-step processes, reusable prompts, decision paths, human-in-the-loop review points, structured outputs, and repeatable automation patterns.
- Develop Python-based solutions for data ingestion, transformation, analysis, reporting, automation, and AI/ML workflow support.
- Integrate APIs, data sources, transcripts, documents, structured data extracts, and operational datasets into working analytical or AI-enabled pipelines.
- Prepare, clean, structure, and transform inconsistent operational data for use in AI, machine learning, reporting, workflow automation, and decision-support solutions.
- Support development of AI/ML and Large Language Model applications, including Natural Language Processing, document summarization, information extraction, classification, prioritization, and structured content generation.
- Build or support solutions that convert raw operational inputs into usable outputs such as summaries, action items, reports, risk grids, test cases, draft proposals, briefing materials, or decision-support products.
- Apply responsible AI practices, including source grounding, output validation, hallucination mitigation, confidence calibration, human review, transparency, and quality control.
- Collaborate with technical teams, program leadership, and stakeholders to ensure AI solutions are practical, secure, usable, and aligned with mission needs.
- Support transition of successful AI pilots into scalable, maintainable, production-ready or repeatable implementations.
- Document prompts, workflows, data flows, model behavior, assumptions, limitations, validation steps, and sustainment procedures to support knowledge transfer and long-term use.
- Provide senior-level technical judgment on what can be automated, what should remain human-reviewed, and what risks or limitations should be communicated to leadership.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, management information systems, engineering, mathematics, statistics, artificial intelligence, or a related technical field.
- Senior-level experience in applied artificial intelligence, Generative AI, prompt engineering, data science, machine learning, software-driven analytics, or AI-enabled workflow automation.
- Demonstrated ability to design and refine effective AI prompts, prompt frameworks, reusable prompt libraries, and structured AI workflows.
- Hands-on experience building AI-enabled solutions using Large Language Models, Natural Language Processing, agent-based workflows, document automation, or decision-support analytics.
- Strong Python development skills, including experience with data pipelines, data transformation, automation scripts, model support, API integration, or analytical workflows.
- Experience translating ambiguous operational problems into structured technical designs, working prototypes, and deployable or repeatable solutions.
- Experience with workflow automation tools such as Microsoft Power Automate, no-code / low-code platforms, agent builders, or similar automation environments.
- Experience working with REST APIs and integrating multiple data sources, applications, or services into functioning technical solutions.
- Ability to work independently as a self-starter, identify next steps, build solution components, troubleshoot issues, and move work forward without heavy direction.
- Ability to participate in customer and technical meetings, understand the operational ask, and convert discussion points into concrete technical actions.
- Strong understanding of responsible AI practices, including grounding outputs in source material, mitigating hallucinations, validating results, documenting assumptions, and incorporating human review.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts, solution designs, risks, limitations, and implementation approaches to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience supporting government clients, healthcare environments, defense environments, or regulated systems preferred.
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Ability to attend customer meetings in Chantilly, Virginia as needed.
