This is a management-level position and is not subject to any collective bargaining agreement or union representation. Employees of Black Feminist Future work across the 501(c)(3) organization and its 501(c)(4) arm, Black Feminist Future Action Fund, to maintain alignment and cohesion of organizational strategy and objectives across both entities, as established by the Executive Director.
Position Summary
The Senior Director of Communications at BFF will provide strategic leadership and oversight in developing, executing, and managing the organization’s internal and external communication strategies. This role will lead brand design, set the digital strategy to enhance BFF's online presence, and leverage social platforms, email programs, technologies, and channels to amplify the impact of Black feminisms. The Senior Director will ensure the alignment of communications efforts with BFF’s mission, expanding visibility and increasing influence across key audiences and platforms.
General Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Provide high-level oversight for all communication efforts, aligning them with BFF's mission and broader organizational goals.
- Brand Development & Design: Lead the effort to refine or strengthen BFF’s brand identity, ensuring that its values and vision are communicated clearly and consistently across platforms.
- Digital Strategy Development: Define, establish, and implement a comprehensive digital communications strategy that effectively encompasses the range of programmatic priorities and aligns and advances the organization's overall mission and vision.
- Oversee the BFF's website, including search engine optimization and navigation, to ensure a superior user experience with an eye toward fresh, creative engagement.
- Earned Media: Craft and nurture relationships with the press and media outlets to amplify BFF’s initiatives and messages
- Audience Engagement: Develop and execute strategies to engage with the target audience through various digital channels, fostering meaningful interactions and building brand loyalty.
- Staff Management and Development: Develop and manage communications staff; set clear expectations and provide regular feedback ensuring that each team member is empowered to contribute to BFF’s mission.
- Organizational Leadership Serve as a senior leadership team member, providing issue expertise and thought leadership that inform the Executive Director and lead change across the organization.

Job Requirements
As an expert communicator, you know how to integrate communications and organizing to support long-term narrative strategies that change what is possible. You will also demonstrate effectiveness in:
- Issue expertise: Must possess a strong Black feminist analysis, have a deep understanding of the current landscape and be a knowledgeable teacher of Black feminist theory and praxis.
- Communication. Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills. Must possess a strong track record as an implementer of information in a way accessible and understandable by all levels of staff.
- Management. Must be adept at assembling and leading a team of traditional comms and digital staff plus creatives, and managing them in a fast-paced, campaign environment to amplify the same narrative drumbeat in the service of our organizing goals.
- Messaging & Storytelling. Must be able to skillfully communicate our organization’s story, creating clear, consistent, creative, compelling content. You will have proficiency in using storytelling and narrative shifting strategies to engage and influence BFF’s targeted audiences to greater understanding of our work. You know how to make a clear point using personal stories and have the ability to quickly write compelling and well-messaged copy.
- Strategic Thinking. Must set objectives, goals and benchmarks in alignment with BFF’s organizational strategic plan. You will be adept at designing strategy and structure, preparing a plan that identifies outcomes, and conducting analyses.
- Strong creative communication skills as a way to draw new and existing members in and build community

You will be a strong candidate for the Senior Director position if you possess the following attributes and competencies:
Passion and Commitment
- Commitment to Black feminisms, the desire to break up with patriarchy to confront disparities against Black women, girls, and gender-expansive people, and the belief that digital storytelling and shifting narratives can create change
- Experience
- Minimum 7+ years of proven experience in a strategic communications role, preferably in a mission-driven setting
- Previous experience drafting and copy-editing social media campaigns
- Knowledge in video production, editing, and optimization for online platforms, with a strong understanding of storytelling techniques and visual communication principles
