SCADA Field Engineer

We’re a team of friends bound together by a mission to preserve our planet for future generations through innovative energy solutions and modern infrastructure. Intersect develops, constructs, and operates the most ambitious power and data center infrastructure in the country by co-locating industrial demand with dedicated gas and renewable power generation.

Intersect was acquired by Google in March 2026 and operates as an independent subsidiary. We are developing and constructing multiple gigawatts of energy and data center projects in the U.S., enabling more data center and generation capacity to come online faster. We’re on an aggressive growth trajectory and looking for people hungry to tackle the largest energy challenges on the planet.

Location & Team Gatherings

Intersect has been a fully flexible workplace since its founding in 2016.  We’ve been very intentional about the way we do things. We are not work-from-home, hybrid, or in-office - we are any and all of those options! Deepening social connections and offering shared experiences is a cornerstone of the way we work. We connect as a team at our Team Week experiences four times a year and at our recently established Hub locations - SF Bay Area, NYC Metro Area, NY; Denver, CO; Austin, TX; Calgary, AB; and Toronto, ON.

We are currently looking for candidates located within 60 miles of any of the listed hubs to foster more in-person connections while maintaining our flexible remote culture.

About this role

As a SCADA Field Engineer on Intersect's Engineering team, you will serve as the essential on-site representative of our centralized engineering organization across utility-scale clean energy facilities. You will partner directly with EPC contractors, commissioning teams, and OEMs to ensure critical SCADA, protection, and automation infrastructure is built, tested, and delivered functionally to specification.

You will act as the crucial technical link connecting active field operations with long-term engineering design, conducting physical inspections, resolving communication discrepancies, and providing ground-truth operational context. This role includes a training period of 4 weeks to reach full productivity.

Team overview

This team plays a critical role in advancing Intersect's mission to accelerate the clean energy transition. The Engineering team ensures that our large-scale power infrastructure operates with maximum reliability, safety, and compliance across its entire lifecycle. Joining this team means stepping onto the front lines of high-voltage power automation, solving technical challenges in real time, and growing alongside dedicated engineers committed to operational excellence and long-run value.

What you'll do

Oversee SCADA and Automation System Commissioning
Conduct comprehensive physical inspections of SCADA nodes, RTUs, PLCs, network switches, and field instrumentation to verify installation quality and strict adherence to engineering designs.
Review and validate EPC-provided commissioning reports, pre-functional checklists, and point-to-point telemetry documentation to certify operational readiness and flag deficiencies.

Provide On-Site Technical Expertise and Protocol Diagnostics
Serve as the primary technical authority for EPCs and field technicians on SEL protective relay logic, SEL-RTAC configurations, and substation communication architectures.
Perform in-depth network packet inspection using Wireshark to diagnose protocol-level anomalies across Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850 networks under live operating conditions.

Drive Cross-Functional Field Coordination
Represent centralized engineering in daily on-site coordination meetings with EPC contractors, commissioning agents, and transmission system operators to align on schedules and critical milestones.
Maintain proactive, transparent communication channels with centralized engineering, delivering timely site context to accelerate decision-making and resolve technical escalations.

Standardize Fleet Documentation and Asset Excellence
Track open punch-list items, commissioning deviations, and site revisions in Jira to establish rigorous as-built documentation.
Feed real-world field observations back into centralized design standards, continuously refining commissioning test procedures and technical specifications across Intersect's fleet.

What you'll bring

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
3+ years of hands-on field engineering experience in utility-scale clean energy facilities, power generation plants, or high-voltage substation environments.
Demonstrated expertise configuring and commissioning SEL protective relays and SEL-RTACs using SEL Quickset and SEL Acselerator.
Proven proficiency in industrial network troubleshooting and packet analysis using Wireshark across DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850 protocols.
Hands-on experience deploying and troubleshooting HMI screens and data visualizations within Ignition Perspective.
Familiarity with NERC CIP compliance frameworks, grid telemetry standards, and utilizing Jira for issue tracking and resolution.
Demonstrated ability and willingness to travel up to 50% to project sites, maintaining safety-first discipline, composure, and resourcefulness in remote field environments.
Collaborative mindset with exceptional communication skills to influence contractors and cross-functional teams without formal authority.
Commitment to technical integrity, continuous improvement, and operational excellence, aligned with Intersect's values of Equity, Humility, Authenticity, Long-run Value, and People Come First.
