Software Engineer

About Upsun

Upsun is the software factory for AI-human workflows. We build the tools that let engineering teams work with confidence, with AI agents and humans working together from the first idea all the way to production. Developers, DevOps engineers, and platform teams use Upsun to move faster without losing control.

Upsun brings this together through two products: one that shapes the work, and one that runs it.

• Upsun Dispatch™: where your team and AI agents work together. Upsun Dispatch keeps the right humans in the loop at the right moments, with human approval built in, full visibility into what’s happening, and no surprises on the bill. Agents do the volume and your team holds the line.
• Upsun Cloud: where that software runs. Upsun Cloud handles building, deploying, and scaling what your team ships, with:
  • Predictable performance, even at scale
  • Secure, compliant environments by default
  • Real-time observability and cost transparency
  • Cloning, configuration, and provisioning in seconds

The name says it all. "Up" means uptime, reliability, and acceleration. "Sun" reflects our follow-the-sun-support, a 24x7, globally distributed support team keeping the lights on while you rest. Our core belief is that software should power brighter solutions and greater innovation.

Upsunners are a remote, global workforce, and we thrive in a multicultural team. We are committed to open source and an open, welcoming environment. Our team spans the globe and the experience spectrum.

What's our commonality, our cultural fabric? A curious spirit and a thirst for knowledge; an eagerness for innovative ideas and cultures. We believe we can build anything together in an environment that frees you to do your best work.

Our values:

🌿 We make a positive impact.

✨ We aim for the stars.

💚 We care for each other.

Impact of a Software Engineer

At Upsun, we build tools that shape how developers create, deploy, and run software. That can mean making an entire application environment available for testing or bringing AI agents and developers together in structured workflows. These challenges require thoughtful engineering: making powerful capabilities easy to use while giving teams control over how their software is built and operated.

Our engineering work connects new possibilities with the demands of established systems. It takes curiosity to investigate beyond the obvious answer, technical judgment to weigh different approaches, and the drive to turn ideas into working software. Across technical backgrounds and time zones, we share expertise, question assumptions, and learn from one another to make decisions and move forward. There’s room for different strengths and perspectives to shape what we build next.

What to expect

• End-to-end ownership: Design, build, and maintain software within your team’s area, working with teammates from implementation through release and production support.

• Technical decisions: Bring your reasoning to design discussions, consider alternative approaches, and help the team move forward with sound trade-offs between delivery, maintainability, and risk.

• Cross-functional collaboration: Work through interfaces, APIs, and user experience with Engineering, Product, Design, and Support, drawing on the expertise each team brings.

• AI-assisted engineering: Use AI tools to support development and share approaches that improve how the team works.

• Quality, security, and reliability: Build these considerations into your work from the outset, including the observability needed to understand its behaviour in production.

• Shared engineering practice: Exchange knowledge through pairing, code reviews, team sessions, and feedback. Write documentation that gives colleagues the context to understand and build on your work.

What you bring

• Production experience: A track record of delivering reliable production software, with strong programming fundamentals and proficiency in Python, Go, or TypeScript. Depending on the team, your specific language experience might align best with a particular role, but we value the ability to learn new languages and technologies as needs evolve.

• Systems understanding: The ability to reason about how your work fits into a larger system, including dependencies, data flow, and component failures.

• APIs and data: Experience building or consuming APIs and working with data stores such as relational databases.

• Testing and correctness: A habit of writing automated tests, including failure paths, with attention to the consequences of errors for users.

• Security: An understanding of security best practices in software development.

• CI/CD practices: Familiarity with cloud environments and CI/CD pipelines.

• Curiosity and persistence: A drive to understand difficult problems, learn from setbacks, and work with others to find a way forward.

• AI collaboration: Comfort working with AI as both a tool and a teammate, knowing when to delegate, how to review its output, and taking over when needed.

Bonus

• A background in cloud platforms or developer tools.

• Experience in areas such as identity and access management, billing, provisioning and orchestration, or frontend development for technical products.

• Integrating complex third-party services with constraints on contracts, rate limits, and availability.

• Designing highly available systems.

• Contributions to developer experience improvements.

Where we hire

At Upsun, remote work isn't just a trend - it's our foundation. The freedom of remote work with the support of a diverse, global team has been our successful model for over a decade. Our culture celebrates flexibility and collaboration, and while we have team members in over 30 countries around the globe, we are currently focused on hiring for this role in Canada, France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
